When I fired Driveclub up for the first time I was very excited. I am a huge fan of Evolution Studio's work. Motorstorm was my favorite racing series last gen, their rally sims the gen before were also top notch. Driveclub has been a mystery to me because it has the looks of a sim racer, it was delayed for almost a year, and there has been very little talk about how it actually plays.
It's 3:39 am as I type this, the game unlocked for me at 1am. I played the entirety of the rookie tour. The online went in and out (mostly out). I also was streaming in front of a bigger audience than I usually have. All of these things could have contributed to how I feel about the game so I'm putting them out there for you all to decide. But first off, let me get some facts out of the way.
I've heard this game described as "simcade" many times. It's not Burnout, where you can check a car flying off the road, but it's an arcade racer. The cars and sounds are sim, everything else is based on fun gameplay. If you are looking for a racing sim this is not the game for you.
The lighting is amazing. The whole "no shadows" thing is absurd. No one playing this game will have any doubts about it being lit in real time in amazing detail.
The crowds are in 3D. When you fly by them they look flat. Mostly because you are flying by them. When you drive up to them, they are full 3D models.
The graphics are amazing, for the most part, but not perfect. It's not DOWNGRADETON like many Xbox leaning people hoped, but it's more a graphic nerd's type of game. Volumetric clouds, lighting, fucking sprinklers... they are all amazing. The rest of the game looks amazing as well, but in certain light the textures look flat. The foliage looks great for the most part but sometimes looks lower res. Don't get me wrong here, Driveclub, on many tracks, is one of the best looking games i've played... but if you want to selectively pull out a screenshot that looks like shit you can. Those regions pop up from time to time.
Gameplay-wise there is no competition between this and Forza Horizon 2. I don't mean that one is better than the other, I mean that they do very different things and they both do them extremely well.
Overall, through my first night with the game, as the many people in my stream can attest... I had a blast. I wanted to love it, and I did. It isn't what I thought it would be, but it's a crazy amount of fun. I can't wait until Sony gets its shit together and has the servers working for more than 5 minutes at a time and I have a full club going. This game is going to be in my playlist for a long time.
Nice write-up Pete. Especially like the comparison comment - been saying this for months and come Friday will be the happy owner of both - mumble grumble UK release dates...
Looking forward to finally be playin' the full version in... 11 hours and 11 minutes...
Nice Pete-cam reaction shot!
Nice write up Pete, just gotta wait until Friday now

I appreciate the write up Pete! Looking forward to getting my hands on the PS+ version to see if I want to pick it up.
Looking for the Tweet of this so I can retweet it!
That's a nice intense face there. The sense of speed looks really good. This and FH2...only so much money...
Nice work on the impressions piece Pete. Lucky for me I just got some money back from a car loan that got paid off when I traded the car in. Just in time for this release schedule. Picked up Horizon 2, NBA and Driveclub.
